June 24 - end of the asparagus season

Whatever day it happens to fall on, 24 June will always be known as the final day of the asparagus
season. Year after year, the season is anything but predictable: what will the weather be like, when will
the first spears appear, will the harvest be abundant or sparse due to the weather... These are questions
that are impossible to answer in advance. The one thing we do know: no matter how the season unfolds,
it always ends on 24 June.

On 24 June, the last of the asparagus are harvested and from 25 June onwards, the plants are given
time to rest. This period of rest is essential, allowing them to regain strength and grow steadily
through the summer, basking in the summer warmth without the pressure of producing.
This way, the plants are strong enough to easily make it through the winter so they will be ready to
deliver another fine crop the following year.

“The 2025 asparagus season got off to a slightly slow start due to low night-time temperatures in late
March and early April. Soil temperatures took longer than normal to reach the right level, meaning the
first spears came through a bit later and prices at the start of the season were on the high side. The
fine spring weather that followed encouraged consumption and led to strong demand”,
says Tom
Bolsens, Strategic Sourcing & Innovation Expert at Bakker. “2024 was an exceptionally wet year and
the plants needed a long time to recover. Still, this year’s quality was good, with thick, well-shaped
spears and stable prices throughout the season.”

What next season will bring remains to be seen but one thing is certain: the plants can now enjoy a
well-earned rest.
So if you’d like to enjoy a final taste of our Belgian white gold, this week is the perfect time to add it to
the menu one last time!

Incidentally, did you know we’re looking for a new Strategic Sourcing Expert? Someone who knows
their way around crop cultivation, understands how to respond with the growers to unpredictable
weather, and keeps up with the latest market developments. Take a look at the job posting for more
